Abstract:
While many aspects of business for service companies has improved greatly through IT innovations over the past number of decades, the art of scheduling has remained largely the responsibility of a highly skilled dispatcher within most of these organisations. This person, albeit with the help of various tools ranging from spreadsheets to standalone scheduling systems, is ultimately responsible for compiling the optimal schedule for what is typically a growing team of engineers. Not an easy task and even more difficult when the role has to be temporarily filled due to absence. This white paper explores the approaches available in automating the scheduling process.
